Other Florida Regions Florida Keys The Florida Keys is an archipelago or cluster of islands extending from the southeastern Florida peninsula near Miami, running south and then curving west to Key West, and out to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie in the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and creating Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern tip of Key West is just 90 miles (145 km) from Cuba. Key Biscayne is actually attached at the north end to the mainland, and is therefore not considered part of the Keys by some Floridians. It is, however, part of the same geological formation, atop which sits coral rock islands, as well as partly-submerged mangrove islands. The city of Key West is the county seat of Monroe County, which covers mostly the Everglades on the mainland, and all of the islands from Key Largo south and west. Lee Island Coast Lee Island Coast is a beach community in southwestern Florida, USA. The region includes Fort Myers, Sanibel, Captiva, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Estero, Pine Island, Boca Grande, North Fort Myers and Lehigh Acres. The size of the city of Orlando is very unusual for a metropolitan area of its size because the city's total population only tops at 185,951. The reason for this here in Greater Orlando is because most of the inhibitants of the metropolitan area lives in the suburbs and unincorporated areas of the very dense counties of Orange and Seminole. Redneck Riviera The Redneck Riviera is a colloquialism for a stretch of the Gulf Coast of the southern United States that is known for its resorts and widely considered to have some of best beaches found worldwide. For many years, the beaches were also deemed to have the whitest sand in the world but recent hurricanes in the 1990s and 2000s have necessitated the addition of grayish or beige-colored sand, something that has angered residents of the area. Over time, the sands will bleach white again in the sun, perpetuating the beauty of the area. The area of coast is roughly bounded by Mobile, Alabama on the west and Panama City, Florida on the east. This area is also referred to as the Emerald Riviera, or the Emerald Coast, for its stunningly green-colored water, which is due to the algae content of the waters reflected off the sugar-white sands of the area. Panama City Beach, Florida also claims this as a nickname. Space Coast The Space Coast is a region in the U.S. state of Florida around Kennedy Space Center, where NASA frequently launches rockets and shuttles into space. Cities in the area include Titusville, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne and Palm Bay, and most of the area lies within Brevard County. Treasure Coast Florida’s Treasure Coast stretches from Port St. Lucie in the south through Vero Beach in the north, and covers St. Lucie County and Indian River County. The Treasure Coast name refers to a number of ships, including those of the Spanish treasure fleet, that are believed to have sunk off the coast during the 17th and 18th centuries. Valuable artifacts from these ships are still being recovered today, both by amateur and professional treasure-hunters. South Florida metropolitan area South Florida redirects here.
